Top 5 places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo
But first, a history lesson. Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May, is not Mexican independence day. Rather, called the Battle of Puebla, the holiday honors the military victory in 1862 over the French forces of Napoleon III.
So, where should one go to celebrate this victory?
1- Home
2- home, but underlined
3- home, but in bold letters
4- home, but in italics
5- Tu Casa, aka home in spanish
Okay seriously, it’s crazy times as some places in the US are opening back up this week. Restaurants in Tampa are allowed to have outdoor seating with social distancing. I’m not going to tell you how to live your life, but be cautious as you begin to integrate some normalcy. I for one am going to be drinking this mint watermelon margarita and shaking my maracas in my living room. 💃🏻 Olé!
But let’s say its the year 2021, and the world is better than ever. Here are my top places to travel to to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!
Puebla, Mexico
The heart of this holiday, where the battle was won, this is a historical place to go if you are a fan of Cinco de Mayo. 300,000 visitors flock here each May to participate in the multiple parades, festivals, and endless enchiladas.
Tijuana, Mexico
As the closest big Mexican city, it’s easy to get here from California and makes a great day trip from San Diego. Crossing the border, you’ll be welcomed by flag lined streets, mariachi bands, and take pics in classic ponchos & sombreros. Enjoy your margarita, take a stroll on the beach and then head back before the sun sets.
San Diego, old town, CA USA
There is a rich bit of history and mexican influence in San Diego, and Old Town is the place to be! 100,000 each year flock to the city streets where there’s flamenco dancing, Baja street tacos, and a three day long festival. If you’re feeling really festive, you can go to or participate in Lucha libre (mexican wrestling).
San Antonio, Texas USA
Did you know that the Square Market is the largest Mexican market in America? Probably because Span and Mexico ruled San antonio for almost 118 before it became a part of America. There’s a great firework display at the Alamo each year.
Tulum, Mexico
This is not your typical destination to party during Cinco de Mayo, however I do think it’s a great place to escape on holiday and still appreciate Mexican history and culture. You can go see the Tulum ruins, lounge on the la playas, and enjoy local horchata.
Which city sounds more your speed? I think for me, I could really use an escape to tell Tulum, to relax and do some outdoor adventuring. Just praying we’ll be able to adventure for holidays next year!
Sincerely,
Sarah
