I’m moving to LONDON!! 🇬🇧
Holy sh*t y’all, it’s happening 😭…I am accomplishing a huge dream of mine and moving abroad in LESS THAN A WEEK! Ahhh
Moving abroad has been a DREAM of mine for as long as I can remember. Each time I traveled abroad, sometimes for weeks, it never felt long enough. I didn’t want to just go somewhere and see the sites, I wanted to eat, sleep, & breathe the culture. I wanted access to Europe and beyond. I wanted to meet new people and go on adventures. But most of all, I wanted to know I didn’t let the fear of uncertainty hold me back from reaching my full potential life.
This has been in the works for over a year now, but continued to get delayed due to covid so I had no idea if this was ever going to come to fruition. I mean my visa literally came in the mail last week! 😅 So there’s SO much to do in only a little amount of time and I’m filled with a mix of excitement & nerves of whats to come.
Why London?
London has been a city familiar to my family for decades due to my Dad working for a UK based company.
London is the gateway to Europe & beyond. Flights from London Heathrow airport are SO much cheaper than flying over from the states. For example, a Ryanair flight in October to Helsinki, Finland would only cost 25 Euros ( ~$30).
Since Brexit, the UK has changed their youth mobility & immigration laws. Now, they have a new scheme effective 2020 that if you graduate from a UK University, you will have 2 years rights to work after. After trying to find companies that would hire & sponsor me, this route gets me in the city I want as well as the credentials I need to be a strong candidate to get hired there.
This may be obvious, but everyone speaks English. I had looked into other favorite countries like Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, but they wouldn’t have a two year guarantee to get a job & stay after. Plus I am not fluent in a second language (although I am brushing up on my Spanish/French).
Even though I believe myself to be an adaptable person, I felt like I would have the least culture shock by moving to the UK. For as much as I have traveled, the longest I’ve ever been away was for six weeks while studying abroad. I wanted to give myself the best opportunity for long-term success. Plus, with my dad‘s company being based in the UK, we have friends there who I know would be of help if something were needed and with restrictions lifting my family could come visit.
I am thrilled to finally share this with you all and show you my life living abroad! Feel free to message me with any questions you have about the process :) Now to figure out how to pack my life into two suitcases! 😅
Sincerely,
Sarah
