On a budget: Northern Lights in Norway for £1,200

On a budget: Northern Lights in Norway for £1,200

I spent four nights in Tromso, Norway for exactly £1,157 (43 pounds under budget!)

Let’s break it down

Hotel- £268 (£536 total)

If you saw my last blog post the other day about Tromso, you know how much I raved about our hotel! I really feel like this was an amazing price considering we got access to a sauna, Jacuzzi, breakfast every morning, tea, and cake every afternoon, as well as dinner one night. Honestly, you could just eat here throughout the day, and never have to spend a penny which makes it so worth the value.

*Obviously, I promote solo travel, however, this was a trip with my friend, so we split the cost which made the trip price much more reasonable

Flight- £380

Honestly, the flight was the most expensive thing about the trip. I’m sure some of it had to do with the time of year we chose as well as having a direct flight over, but the best seem to be going through Norwegian air. The only downfall is as it’s a budget airline you do pay for everything else like choosing your seat, baggage, even the water on the plane

Transportation- £55.12

OK, so I included my train from Clapham Junction to Gatwick Airport, round-trip, as that is part of the trip journey. Otherwise the trip total would have been closer to £1,100. The taxi ride from the airport to the hotel is only 10 minutes, but taxis are quite expensive, so be careful about rates and scams! There’s an app you can download called Taxifix, which allows you to book a taxi almost like an Uber. To give a reference point, our evening flight near midnight cost around 25 pounds.

Arctic activities- £ 258.18

I feel like this was reasonable pricing considering we went on an all day landscape tour, a northern lights tour, took the cable car up to the top of the mountain above Tromso, as well as access inside the Arctic cathedral. Our landscape tour provided us hot chocolate & cake while the northern lights tour they provided our snow suits & winter extreme boots, headlamps, campfire meal & marshmallows, etc.

Food & Drink = £166

This was crazy how reasonable the food budget was, but we benefited a lot from the hotel & tours providing food/snacks. A lot of the fancier restaurants in town were also closed for Easter, so it could be a lot higher depending on where you choose to eat. Some food to definitely try there is reindeer hotdogs & cloudberry tea.

Souvenirs/gifts = £30

I always get a magnet wherever I go, which was only £4. The big chunk I spent was actually on a sleeping t-shirt, because for some reason I thought it’d still feel like the arctic tundra in the room & packed my fleece pj’s 😅. I didnt pack anything lighter, so that shirt became my sleeping shirt & now souvenir haha.

What do you think, was this a reasonable budget for 4 nights?

Sincerely,

Sarah
